Ferry boats are leaving from Cancún every half hour, from 5.00 am to 11.30 pm. The round trip costs 300 Mexican pesos, which is equal to 13,3€. Ferry schedule and prices are available here : www.ultramarferry.com

Only thirteen kilometers from Cancún, this paradisiac island is easily accessible by boat. I took an afternoon while I was in Cancún to go there and enjoy these famous beaches. The milky blue water is indeed fantastic, but if you want to find a spot on the sand for your towel, it is preferable to go on weekdays.

The tourism is the main point of the island; eating fresh seafood in one of the numerous restaurants, enjoying a good cocktail under the palm-trees, buying mexicain souvenirs at every street corner and enjoying water-activities are the common things to do there.

Golf carts and taxis are the usual means of transport on the island, but some beaches, like Playa Sol and Playa Norte are accessible by foot from the port.

Just one word : UNBELIEVABLE ! I'm not ready to forget this day.

I was wondering wether or not I should spend the money for this excursion, because Cancún was already expensive with its crazy nightlife, but I really don't regret it. That was one of the best experiences of my life so far.

À savoir

In Cancún and Isla Mujeres, the most famous excursion is the swimming with the whale sharks. There are a lot not far from the coast during the summer.

The price can vary between $100 and $160 USD. Personally, I booked it for $100 at my hostel and it was the cheapest offer I had seen.

The same morning of the excursion, a taxi came to search us at our own places to bring us to the boats departure point.

There, they offer diving suits rentals for $15 USD. Without it, you are forced to wear the lifejackets, which is quiet annoying to swim well.

In the early morning, we left Cancún on a small boat, with the snorkeling equipment on board. We were a group of five and we navigated during one hour on big waves, some people started to feel seasick after few minutes. Indeed it was not the best sensation, but we knew that it was gonna be worth it! Around 10.00 am we arrived at the alimentation zone of those giant creatures. A lot of boats were already on the site, around the whale sharks. I was completely crazy after seeing the first sharks fin on the surface. Honestly my first impression was "No way I'm gonna jump into this water surrounded by sharks!".

But then one by one, we jumped into the water, with our goggles and mask on the nose. We swam near the sharks during ten minutes and got back on board. Each person jumped and swam with them three times. When I came back on the boat the first time, my whole body was trembling, I couldn't believe what just happened. The most impressive (scary) moment was when the animal came straight on me, the mouth, which is enormous, wide open. I knew they are inoffensive but seeing the size of its mouth was really scary.

After this incredible swimming session with the animals, we navigated again about 15 minutes to get to Isla Mujeres and have a lunch there. The boat stopped 50 meters from the beach and the couple of guides served us fresh seafood that they had prepared. We ate on the boat and we had time after that to do some snorkeling or just enjoy the amazing beach. We came back to Cancún in the early afternoon.

In order to make the most of your visit, turn around the small city and discover the other side of the island with beaches less crowded. There you can also admire wilder nature.
